Guide to 2017 Summer Reading at Browning

Grade by Grade Instructions

Each grade has different requirements and plans for summer reading. Please use the Lower School, Middle School, and Upper School tabs to locate your son's grade or classes for the 2017 / 2018 school year. Please read all specifications carefully. In some cases, you will need to download documents or selection lists. Please contact Sarah Murphy, smurphy@browning.edu if you have any questions or difficulty.

2017 Common Book

Each year, students entering Forms II through VI, along with faculty and trustees, read one book in common. This summer's book is Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah. Copies are provided for students (to be picked up in the library), so there is no need to purchase that title.

Purchasing Summer Reading Titles

We are happy to announce that we're partnering with nearby independent bookseller, Shakespeare & Co. this summer. Most books on these lists are in store (or will be soon), many more can be ordered (turnaround time is one week or sooner). Additionally, Shakespeare & Co. will offer a 10% discount for Browning students purchasing summer reading titles. The bookstore is located at 939 Lexington Avenue, between 68th and 69th.

These books are also available online, through your local public library, and at other book sellers in print and in digital formats.

Recommended Reads

In addition to requirements, the librarians and teachers have also included some recommended titles for those who wish to keep reading. These are books that are good all year long!

Please note that Upper Schoolers should choose at least one book from the recommended list to add to their summer reading lists.
