Guide to 2019 Summer Reading at Browning

Grade by Grade Instructions

Each grade has different requirements and plans for summer reading. Please use the Lower School, Middle School, and Upper School tabs to locate your son's grade or classes for the 2019 / 2020 school year. Please read all specifications carefully. In some cases, you will need to download documents or selection lists. Please contact Head Librarian, Murielle Louis, mlouis@browning.edu if you have any questions.

2019 Common Read

This year's Common Book experience is about choices. Four age appropriate books have been selected for students entering Grades 1 through Form VI.  The titles are:

  • Because by Mo Willems and Amber Ren                                 (Grades 1-4)

  • Merci Suarez Changes Gear by Meg Medina                           (Grades 5-6)

  • Wild Bird by Wendelin Van Draanen                                         (Form I and II)

  • Educated by Tara Westover                                                      (Form III through VI)

We're inviting faculty, staff, and trustees to read one of the books.  Copies are provided for students (to be picked up in the library) so there is no need to purchase that title.

Purchasing Summer Reading Titles

We are happy to announce that we're partnering with nearby independent bookseller, Shakespeare & Co. this summer. Most books on these lists are in store (or will be soon), many more can be ordered (turnaround time is one week or sooner). Additionally, Shakespeare & Co. will offer a 10% discount for Browning students purchasing summer reading titles. The bookstore is located at 939 Lexington Avenue, between 68th and 69th.

These books are also available online, through your local public library, and at other book sellers in print and in digital formats.

Recommended Reads

In addition to requirements, the librarians and teachers have also included some recommended titles for those who wish to keep reading. These are books that are good all year long!
